Dappling forest light
Komorebi is a wet forest with sunlight piercing the canopy. The dappling green and golden light of rosewood leaf, hinoki and cedarwood shimmers through the leaves. Lavender and black spruce bend the light in unexpected ways. Beneath, nagarmotha and moss anchor the fleeting light, while whispers of tobacco, resins, and musks linger in the shadows. This is not merely a scent— its the misty illuminated trees only experienced while hiking a north west trail in a bottle. Luminous, meditative, alive with shadow and light.
A Japanese word for 'tree-light,' with no comparable English word. While the English language has 'sunbeam' or 'dappled light', these are more general. Scientifically, 'crepuscular rays', describes beams of light shining through the environment, which in technical terms, is what occurs during komorebi (木漏れ日). However, this fails to describe the strong aesthetic effects of komorebi as this light inspires feelings of transcendence and awe.
